Following in the footsteps of her salon-owning grandma, Lorri Dar opened Kokopelli in 1997 with visions of sophisticated work in a relaxed atmosphere. Lorri trained with Aveda, Sebastian, Redkin and Trevor Sorbie, and mentored for 7 years by the wonderful Kimico. In her work, Lori loves to use unique free style cutting techniques, paired with detailed colour formulations, to find just the right look for her clients. Drawing on a wide range of inspiration, Lorri’s work has been featured both on runways and TV shows. Lorri is also a serious dog lover, music lover and the singer/bass player in the group, silent martin, with other projects in development.

When I look at hair I see shapes, shapes that can be molded to not only suit a person’s face and style but to the person as a whole. The technique I am about to describe works on all types of curly hair, even the laziest wave can have a more alive bounce. I can also apply this technique to straight hair to give effortless volume and great shape.

I love working with all hair types but working with the irregular nature of curly hair can be very interesting. It is a common technique to shape hair from the outside radius using specific angles. I concentrate on the naturalness of the curl. I focus on what the hair does and wants to do naturally. When you are born your hair doesn’t grow out even, its natural state is slightly uneven creating a medusa effect. Thus a hairstyle looks contrived with a 45-degree long layer shelf cut into it.

In my years of experience I have found that if you cut only on the outside and make a perfect 45 degree angled cut, no matter how soft you polish the cut lines you end up with a quick grow out with a bell shaped head of hair. The bell shape then makes the shoulders disappear and therefore the butt look larger.

What I aim to achieve in my work are hairstyles that complement the whole body. A grow out period that lasts a longer without loosing shape. As well, with this technique unnecessary bulk is reduced from the hair, relieving headaches and creating quicker drying these are just a few advantages.

This hair is particularly thick and somewhat course . With a lot of attention we have learned how manage her hair with the right shampoos/conditioners/product and colour . With shade EQ 3R we stain the grey hair . I mix clear into the formula to soften and close cuticle while adding shine. The same technique has been used as this client is petite we don’t want her to look like all head our goal is to not have the appearance of a Q-tip rather some great angles with loose pieces to add freedom for the look an softness . I used extreme depth in my slices to achieve this look.

Weddings, graduation, work parties or a Saturday night on the town with the ladies! Updo’s and formal styles are not always the kind of think one likes to do on their own, but I dig it. Folks, I have bobby pins tattooed on my arm for a reason. Sculpting hair into styles and shapes that we don’t use/ wear everyday is the most fun challenge I have in my job. I get so excited when I see that I have a formal/Updo style booked in my schedule. From the simple but beautiful tousled braids, to soft 20’s inspired waves or the smooth, elegant, and romantic formal bridal styles, allow me to create something that you will love!

Kelly began her hair journey back in high school, when she and 3 best friends had what they dubbed, “Hair Parties”, due to the fact that we had all had some bad salon experiences. A few creative haircuts and some unique colours later, she found herself in Hair School!

She covets bobby pins and creative updo’s, and with nearly a decade of working with hair her expertise and knowledge are an asset to us here at the shop.

Kelly enjoys a challenge, whether it is beginning a side project in Vancouver’s burgeoning burlesque dance community, pushing her limits at Tough Mudder or finding the perfect cut and colour for you, she is always ready with advice, a thorough consultation, and any flavour of gum you might ever desire.

Kelly feels like a Kokopelli ‘lifer’ and is excited for the future.

When not at Kokopelli you can find Kelly on the volleyball courts or running, rain or shine.

Brenna

Brenna’s hours:

Brenna has been doing hair professionally since 2004, and has been at Kokopelli since 2011. Her philosophy for hair design is to create hair that fits your needs and lifestyle, but most importantly she wants to bring out your own individual style. You’re unique, and so are the endless possibilities that lay within your hair!

Listening. Having fun. Brenna prides herself on not taking herself too seriously, and will make your experience here full of fun, laughter, and crazy conversations. She can offer an empathetic ear, or give you peace and quiet if that’s how you’re comfortable.

Niio loves the challenge of colour correcting and creative dimensional colours. She can take a part of you and make it shine, can formulate something that compliments you and is unique to your style. From the beginning of your conversation with Niio, to the process formulation, colour theory and light refraction through problem solving and the technical placement, every detail and thought all play out to create a beautiful painting that becomes apart of you. She will create a cut that is fit for your lifestyle, your texture, your body and face shape, your bad-itude.

Working with your natural texture, density, and colour, she can enhance your colour, face features, and body type. Sculpting and slicing to enhance curls so they create bounce and flow, shaping the hair from the inside to give longevity to help avoid the Xmas tree triangle in between cuts. Carve out a cut that gives you movement and volume where you need it and want it.

Niio’s passion has always been helping others in any way she can. With tape in extensions she is able to help you bring thickness, length, and fullness, back into your hair! When she’s not at work you can find her cuddled up to her favourite block heads (pit bull and husband).

Trevor Carlson Gay

If you want a stylist who will give you a bespoke look, curated to your personality and unique style, well, you’ve made it. Journey’s over. With a background in barbering, and a passion for fashion, Trevor works with each client to find out what works for them. There is no one-cut/colour-fits-all in this chair. Trevor specializes in short cuts, from fades to Pixies.

Beyond the chair, Trevor pursues interests in music, photography and fitness.

Hey there! I’m Alex. I grew up in Mission and moved to the city to follow my hair dreams. I attended an ACE-IT Hairdressing program in 2017 and fell in love with it! I’ve always loved being creative and doing things hands on, so hair has always felt natural! In my free time I love reading, drawing and exploring new places. My favourite things to do behind the chair include getting freaky with some fashion colour, balayage along side the perfect cut to express your personality! Anything from mullets and shags to pixies and barbering. I would love to meet you and create beautiful hair together!

Priscillia is a French Canadian girl, raised right here in East Van with a true passion for people. You can be guaranteed to always feel heard in her chair, not only about your hair but about anything.

Price will take the time to fully understand your needs while you are in her chair. She strongly believes that hair has everything to do with the way we feel, it can really be a super power when done right and Priscillia is so grateful for having the ability to improve people’s lives while doing what she loves.

Through years of passion, dedication and education, she has become a Redken Certified Hairstylist, and a Master Extensions specialist with BABE which allows her to use any type of hair extension to enhance the look you’re going for, and craft beautiful, custom colors.

Priscillia loves to use her extensive knowledge and experience to modernize classic looks, to make them fun and wearable for a person on-the-go.

I’m Lala and I am originally from Brazil. I love the challenge stylizing possesses, To be able to support the client’s needs for a natural and customized appearance or style is exciting to me. I understand how hard it is to entrust your hair and trend with a stylist either because of a bad experience or no resources for the type of hair texture you have.

I went to hair school in Brazil in 2016 so I utilize my specialized techniques from there. My specialty is cutting curls, afros or wavy natural hair. Curly hair is my passion! I love to work with curly hair, no matter what category your curl. Wave, coil or afro, I can give you an amazing result. I also just LOVE punky Colors they are my favorites however I do an array of techniques.

I love art and I’m inspired to create! In my free time I enjoy drawing, I love making videos and taking pictures for social media. I create artistic applications with everyday makeup, fantasy applications and my own creations

Working with curly Hair

Curly hair is cut dry in order to visualize how each curl falls and to see the length of each curl. After the dry cut, you will have your hair washed, styled and dried with a diffuser. This type of cut is tailored to your hair’s texture type and is ideal for those who primarily wear their in curls. However this method is not suitable for those who flat iron often. Please tell your stylist if you usually flat iron and the stylist will adapt the cut to your needs.

• Hair must be down with *no ponytails pls

Jade

Jade has varied hours:

From a very young age, Jade had a creative spark and expressed her creativity in various mediums throughout her upbringing. That included illustration, piano, martial arts, painting, fashion, design, constantly changing her hair colour (still) and more recently -dance, fitness, flow arts, and needle felting.

She first pursued graphic design when she moved to Vancouver over a decade ago, and after many years in the industry she felt her passion lay elsewhere and desired something more tactile. Having been a DIY hair colour hobbyist since her teenage years, Jade often found herself inspired by hair artists and loved watching them at work while in the salon. After some contemplation, she finally followed her heart to Blanche Macdonald where she graduated from the Professional Hairstyling Program.

Jade believes being a good stylist means being able to offer options and find solutions to every hair situation, help express her client’s individuality and provide a safe space! At the moment she is most enthused about colour (of course), barbering, textured hair, and…more education! As a junior stylist, she is committed to improving her skills and keeping her knowledge up-to-date. Jade looks forward to creating with you!

Mish’s mission is to bring the beautiful person you are on the inside to the outside. She also wants to make your wildest hair dreams come true, or to renew the great look you have always rocked.

Mish graduated from RSH International College of Cosmetology in 2008. Mish loves cutting hair, whether it’s long or short cuts, she has got you covered! Mish also loves doing colour, she has a knack for it all, but where she truly shines is her bright platinum “angel” blondes. Her motto is “a haircut should look great messy or smooth, and colour should still look great if or when it fades.”

Chell has been a hairstylist since 2005, and is well versed in all aspects of hair!

They especially enjoy short haircuts such as pixies and edgy styles that allow them to customize the cut to the individual’s personality.

They believe a good haircut and colour should be wearable in your day to day and will grow out well.

Fashion colours, reds, blondes, and balayage are also their jam!

Kayla

Born and raised in Vancouver, Kayla has dreamt of becoming a hairstylist ever since she was 4 years old. Growing up, she has always loved doing her own makeup and hair and trying to be creative with different looks. Kayla graduated from the Professional Hairstyling Program at Blanche Macdonald Centre in May 2021 and she is currently most passionate about hair colour, braiding and styling. She joined the Kokopelli Team shortly after graduating as an associate to learn more about the hair industry, innovative techniques, and to work towards perfecting her craft to become a well-rounded stylist. In her free time, she enjoys singing, playing the piano and ukulele, painting and playing video games.
